One of the most overlooked part of your home security system is 1) free! and 2) easy and fun for you to do on a weekend with your family. We’re talking about keeping a well-maintained yard clear of debris and very bushy foliage. Homes that have well-maintained yards make it more difficult for a burglar or thief to check out your home without attracting attention from neighbors and yourself. Good, clean landscaping is a big part of keeping your home and your neighborhood safe.
Good yard maintenance has a few major pluses for home security. Firstly, by keeping your yard clear of debris, overgrown bushes and trees, you’re eliminating places that burglars can hide in your yard. Without good hiding places, they are more likely to go to another home or another neighborhood. Burglars operate in the shadows and thereby eliminating these shadows you’re doing your home and home safety a favor. Secondly, make sure to keep your tools (including ladders) well hidden from strangers. These tools will make it infinitely easier for a burglar to break into your home and you don’t want to hand these tools to any burglar. Make sure to keep your tools in a locked garage or shed well out of reach and view of strangers. Thirdly, a good gate or fence may not be impenetrable to nimble thieves but it is certainly a deterrent. Anything that makes a getaway more difficult is good for your home so if you are considering fencing your property or installing a security gate as part of your yard maintenance, this is a great idea!
Can you think of any other reasons why we should keep our yards well maintained? Thinking about these reasons may make it easier to get up on that Saturday morning a put a little work into your front and back yards!
