One great way to manage the safety of your community is to get involved in the local government. Is there an unsafe intersection? Potholes or a road with an inappropriate speed limit? Get involved and petition for change. You’d be surprised at what a little determination and persistence can accomplish when you take the appropriate venues for change. So, besides voting how does one get involved? Here we’ll look at what you can do to get involved and how you can change your community and make it a safer place by working with your local government.
The first step to getting involved in local politics is to educate yourself on what exactly is going on. Who are the people in power? Who is the opposition? What do they support? This goes for everything from city councilmen, commissioners, district courts, legislators, elected judges, mayor, county manager, district attorney, and so on. Learn as much as you can and choose who you would like to support. Your vote while being singular can make a difference, especially in local government. Furthermore, if you are educated and compelling enough you may be able to sway the votes of your friends and family (though only do this through compelling arguments).
There are a lot of small meetings that are usually open to the public where you can learn more about the happenings of your local government and even potentially voice your own opinion on the matter. Additionally, volunteer for any vacant appointed boards and city commissions where you voice will be heard. Here you will be able to meet people and make friends and connections that may be able to later aid you on your quest for change.
Anybody can propose a new bill or law or minor adjustment to your city if you have enough support. This is as easy as gathering signatures for a petition and submitting your proposal to the local government. If your idea is good and not too expensive there’s a good chance that it’ll pass and you’ll have effectively changed your community. Many minor changes like changing a stop sign to a stoplight or altering the speed limit on a certain road will go through without too much opposition if you can create a compelling argument and gather enough support.
